The Debate: Corn vs Soy

Writer: Savannah Wright Savannah Wright

Corn and soy are very prominent features in our current agricultural system. Both have pros and cons and life as we know it would not be the same without either. Corn can be grown very efficiently because it is genetically modified to grow straight up rather than out. Corn has very high yields when grown densely and soy does not. People have tried to grow soy dense but the yields do not increase, they stay the same. Why bother with planting more seeds when the yields are the same. Although soy is not grown efficiently it does have more protein per pound than corn does. This is why soy makes for great animal feed. China uses soy for its animal feed because soy and corn cost the same amount to import but soy is protein dense and corn is not. Both crops are essential to how we live our lives and are great and bad in many ways.
