The island of Mauritius is facing an environmental emergency because a wrecked ship is leaking tons of oil of the coast. Species surrounding the spill are facing risk of drowning in sea pollution. Regardless of how they are released, all petroleum products – gasoline, diesel fuel and motor oil – are toxic to people, plants and wildlife. In addition to containing deadly metals, fuel and oil lower water’s oxygen levels, block life-giving sunlight and generally degrade water quality. Oil contamination in the ocean is no joke and is very deadly to sea life and can affect the food supply. The only thing we can do to help this situation is to work on prevention of future oil spills. Boaters need to make sure everything is screwed on tight and all cracks and pipe issues are fixed before going on to the water. We need to protect our oceans from oil spills, trash, and coral bleaching and the way to do this is to do things like beach cleanups, donating money to organizations that help coral, and living our lives as green as we can. Our Earth needs us to protect it and love on it and it starts with us.
